Katrine Malmer-Høvik is the head of the Intellectual Property and Data Protection practice groups at SANDS.

For 26 years, Katrine has worked with intellectual property law, covering industrial property rights (patents, trademarks, and design), copyright, marketing law, and the protection of trade secrets, company names, and domain names.

She assists clients in drafting and negotiating commercial agreements, including licensing agreements, IT agreements, collaboration agreements, research and development agreements, technology transfer agreements, and consortium agreements.

In the field of data protection, Katrine works on mapping and implementing privacy and information security procedures across various sectors, including healthcare, technology, finance, and education. This work requires a deep understanding of a company’s business model, organisation, data flow, products, services, and the underlying technological solutions used for processing personal data. Her work includes advising on compliance, business development, incident management, drafting data processing agreements, consent texts, and privacy policies, as well as developing procedures for handling access requests, data deletion, and data portability. She also assists with international data transfers and provides guidance on data protection in the workplace, including access to emails and personal data in investigative reports.

Katrine regularly represents clients in court and frequently gives lectures on intellectual property law, data protection, and contract law.

In 2023, she was appointed as a member of the Norwegian Board of Appeal for Industrial Property Rights (KFIR) by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Fisheries.

Before joining SANDS in 2008, Katrine spent nine years as an advisor at the Norwegian Industrial Property Office.
